You're amazing!

Posted on Action Updates by Rajean Hoilett · May 04, 2022 10:20 AM

The May 1st mobilizations across Ontario were amazing. And you made it happen.

Thousands of people in more than 20 cities across Ontario took action for decent work and a workers’ first agenda. And even with the rain, nothing could dampen the determination of our movement to demand better from our elected representatives.

On May 1st – International Workers’ Day – you were among the thousands of people who helped send a strong message to all provincial election candidates that we want: a $20 minimum wage; at least 10 paid sick days; equal pay for part-time, contract and temp agency workers; an end to misclassification and real protections for gig workers; safer working conditions; better laws and better enforcement.

Our communities depend on high-quality public services: from health care and education, to child care and public transit. We need truly affordable housing and livable income support. We’ve also learned from the pandemic that nobody can survive on less than $500 per week, whether that comes from wages, pensions, social assistance, Employment Insurance, or workers’ compensation.

By coming together on May 1st across the province, we’ve shown the depth of support for a workers’ first agenda. But that doesn’t mean all provincial candidates are ready to endorse our vision. That’s why we must keep organizing throughout the election so that no matter who wins on June 2, we’ll be ready to keep fighting for justice for workers.

Decent Work Organizing Meeting

Join us on May 10 at 7:00 pm for the next Justice for Workers organizing meeting. At this meeting, we will debrief about all our amazing work in the lead up to the May 1 day of action. We will also launch our Decent Work Toolkit, giving you everything you’ll need to spread the word and elect decent work champions.

Can we count on you to be at the May 10 meeting?

Don’t miss Heather McGhee!

Wednesday, May 4 | 8:00 pm EDT

The Ontario Federation of Labour and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists Canada are pleased to present: Building the Solidarity Dividend: A Conversation with Heather McGee.

A renowned expert on the American economy, Heather McGhee is one of the most brilliant and influential thinkers exploring inequality today. Both her viral TED talk and her instant New York Times bestseller The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together reveal the devastating true cost of racism—not just for people of colour, but for everyone. Deeply stirring, intelligent, and compassionate, McGhee’s vision offers an actionable roadmap during one of the most critical—and most troubled—periods in history.

ALL OUT MAY 1! Let's demand decent work for all!

Posted on Action Updates by Rajean Hoilett · April 06, 2022 4:49 PM

Momentum is growing for the May 1 provincial day of action, with communities across Ontario planning local events and organizing feeder marches for larger rallies. May 1 will be an important day to kick off the provincial election: the larger the turnout on May 1, the more likely our issues will shape the June 2 provincial election.

Will you join us on Sunday, May 1 and amplify our decent work demands in your community?

Yes, count me in!

Please visit our Resources page to download Justice for Workers May 1 posters and leaflets, customized for local actions.

With mild weather and May 1 around the corner, April is a crucial time to step up our outreach efforts. Read on to learn about some important organizing opportunities.

This Saturday, April 9 in Scarborough, Justice for Workers and the Workers’ Action Centre are hosting an in-person organizer training so we can hit the streets and talk to our co-workers about decent work. Please come and invite your friends, co-workers, and fellow May 1 organizers.

Provincial Justice for Workers Organizing Meetings

Normally, our monthly organizing meetings take place every four weeks, on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm. This month, however, our monthly meeting falls on Equal Pay Day and the Equal Pay Coalition has organized an important leaders’ debate on April 12 at 7:00 pm. So rather than hosting a competing event, we are going to skip our April meeting and encourage all Justice for Workers leaders, activists and supporters to attend the Equal Pay Leaders’ Debate.

That means our next Ontario-wide decent work organizing meeting will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:00 pm. This meeting will be a great opportunity to assess the impact of the May 1 mobilization and use the momentum to make sure we elect decent work champions across Ontario.

Our June organizing meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, June 7, will be perfectly timed for us to assess the election results and plan the next phase of the fight for justice for workers.

APRIL 19: Join the Activist Assembly

On Tuesday, April 19, join Justice for Workers at the OFL’s provincial Activist Assembly. This online assembly will give everyone a chance to hear about the exciting developments in communities across Ontario, and build even more momentum for the May 1 day of action.

In this election, let's make sure decent work issues are raised alongside other crucial issues like housing, child care, public transit, health care, education, decent income support, climate justice, migrant rights, justice for injured workers, and so much more.

Can you join us on April 19 at 6:00 pm?

Yes, I can come!

Help organize wherever you are

Wherever you are in the province, you can help organize and mobilize for the May 1 day of action, for the June 2 provincial election, and beyond.

Here’s how:

  1. Would you like to put up some posters in your community?
  2. Would you like to help us phone other Justice for Workers supporters so they too know about all the exciting events coming up?
  3. Would you like to organize an outreach event in your community, and invite others to join the campaign for decent work?

Let us know what you’d like to do, and we’ll help you do it!

Decent Work Resources

Decent Work and Health Network: New Report
The Decent Work and Health Network released a report detailing the way in which precarious, low-wage jobs dramatically increased the spread of COVID and contributed to unnecessary deaths and sickness.

Please read and consider endorsing the report recommendations.

Racial justice primer
Justice for Workers has published this Primer on why the fight for decent work is a matter of racial justice. You can download it here, pick up copies in-person at the Scarborough training on Saturday, or order copies by emailing us at [email protected].

Minimum wage leaflet and poster
These tools debunk the myth that Premier Doug Ford has “raised the minimum wage.” It explains how we fought for and won not only a minimum wage increase, but also annual cost of living adjustments. But because Doug Ford cancelled our $15 minimum wage, workers lost thousands of dollars of income. We forced him to bring it back - but it’s too little, too late. Now the government is trying to take credit for improving the minimum wage, but we know Ford’s so-called increase is really a cut.

URGENT: We need child care action NOW!

Posted on Action Updates by Rajean Hoilett · March 22, 2022 1:45 PM

With just days left to sign a deal, Ontario is at risk of losing more than a billion dollars in federal funding for a child care program. It’s a scandal that Ontario remains the only jurisdiction that hasn’t signed a deal to deliver high-quality, $10 a day child care.

Can you join us on Wednesday, March 23 at 12:00 noon for an emergency phone zap? Tell Premier Doug Ford, Education Minister Stephen Lecce, and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould to get a deal done! We need high-quality care for our children and that means decent work and wages for early childhood educators and all child care workers.

Yes! I’ll be there!

Even with more than a billion dollars on the table, Premier Doug Ford claims Ontario can’t afford to fund a child care program -- but nothing could further than the truth. Experience from Quebec and other jurisdictions shows that high-quality, affordable child care actually pays for itself by creating high-quality jobs and allowing more women to enter the workforce.

We need to turn up the heat on this government to ensure it not only delivers high quality, affordable child care but also ensures the staff who care for and educate our children have a livable wage, reliable hours, and safe working conditions. After all, the working conditions of early childhood educators are also the learning and nurturing conditions of our children.

Please join us on Wednesday at noon – there’s no time to lose.

Building Worker Power Organizer Trainings

This is an important opportunity to meet new people, build relationships, as well as learn and share new skills.

Select workshops will also be conducted in Bengali, Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish, and Tamil.

TORONTO: Unite Against Racism! Status for All

Whether it's hate speech mixed in with the “Freedom Convoy”; or Black and people of colour refugees and migrants fleeing Ukraine facing abuse – racism is rising. We know that racism is a strategy to divide us to push an anti-people agenda that hurts our climate and our communities in the interests of the richest few. Rising racism means that it is racialized migrants that are scapegoated and excluded. We must take action now.

Join Migrant Rights Network - Ontario on March 20 for a 1.6 km march to support the call for full and permanent immigration status for all 1.6 million mostly racialized working-class migrants. Status for All is necessary for migrants to have the power to protect ourselves from exploitation and scapegoating.

We’re meeting at City Hall at 2:00 pm at 100 Queen Street West as we join with groups across the country to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

We are less than three months away from the June 2 election. We need your help more than ever to organize and elect decent work champions in every riding. And no matter what happens, we must come out of June 2 with a stronger, more powerful movement.

The May 1 provincial day of action, called by the Ontario Federation of Labour, will kick off the election and help make sure workers' demands dominate the agenda.

Urgent action to stop the legalization of wage theft

Posted on Action Updates by Pam Frache · March 01, 2022 3:38 PM

Join us tonight (Tuesday) at 6:30 pm for an emergency phone action to stop Premier Doug Ford from passing legislation that will make it legal for Uber and other corporate tech giants to pay workers less than the hours they work, and deny them basic labour rights.

Can you join this emergency action tonight?

Yes, I'll be there!

Too many gig workers are misclassified by the likes of Uber as “self-employed” to avoid paying their workers minimum wage, holiday, vacation and overtime pay. UberEats' wage theft was exposed at the Ministry of Labour just last week when an Employment Standards Officer ruled in favour of a courier who filed a complaint against the tech giant on precisely these grounds.

On Monday, Premier Doug Ford claimed he was standing up for gig workers by announcing legislation that will "give" gig workers a $15 gig worker minimum wage. But workers should already be getting the $15 minimum wage. That so many gig workers are not reflects the failure of this government to address illegal misclassification.

In practice, Ford's Bill will cut gig workers wages in half, while still denying them their rights as employees such as holiday, vacation and overtime pay.

Ford's legislation only ensures gig workers are paid for the time they are making the delivery–not when they are returning from or waiting for a delivery. So instead of standing up for workers, Doug Ford is again standing up for corporations by legalizing wage theft.

To make matters worse, the Bill also introduces two new carve-outs where more workers can legally be denied full protection under the Act.

Even without this bill, only about one-quarter of Ontario workers are fully protected by the Employment Standards Act (ESA) because so many corporations have lobbied for – and won – exemptions to the rules. Far from strengthening the Employment Standards Act, Doug Ford is punching even more holes into it.

If you can't join us tonight for the emergency phone action, read on for two meetings where you can support gig workers and the fight for decent work.

Sunday, March 6 | 9:30 am to 2:30 pm

Family Day Weekend: Take action to support gig workers!

Posted on Action Updates by Rajean Hoilett · February 18, 2022 2:59 PM

About 150 people attended and we agreed to take a number of important actions in the fight for decent work. Scroll down for more information.

In the meantime, don’t forget to mark your calendars for our upcoming organizing meetings. We meet every four weeks on Tuesday at 7:00 pm EST, as follows: March 15, April 12, May 10, and June 7.

Here's a quick summary of the key actions arising from last Tuesday’s meeting.

Family Day Weekend: Support Gig Workers

We can help Gig Workers United connect more app-based workers to the fight for decent work. On Family Day weekend, many of us will splurge on supper or snacks using an app-based delivery service.

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to have organizing conversations with the frontline workers who deliver our orders.

Register now to see how you can support gig workers

At the Justice for Workers organizing meeting, Jennifer Scott from Gig Workers United reminded us that corporate lobbyists like Uber have been working with the Conservative government to pass legislation that would roll back our rights.

If they get away with it, such legislation would make it legal to misclassify gig workers as “independent contractors”. Doing so paves the way for companies like Uber and Skip the Dishes to pay their workers less than minimum wage and deny workers their basic employment rights.

This is dangerous for all of us. Other employers will use this opening to pay us less for the work we do. Now is the time for us to protect ourselves by supporting gig workers who are under attack. Please help spread the solidarity this weekend by sharing this link.

March 6: Activist Assembly

We’re organizing for the provincial day of action called by the Ontario Federation of Labour for Sunday, May 1st. That day kicks off the provincial election campaign and we want to make sure that Decent Work demands like a $20 minimum wage, 10 paid sick days, and equal pay for part-time, contract and temp agency workers are front and centre.

To get organized, we are attending the OFL Activist Assembly on Sunday, March 6th from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The Activist Assembly will be the place to get inspired and share ideas for what our big action on May 1 can look like in our communities.

Will you be at the Activist Assembly?

Of course, sign me up!

Building Worker Power Workshops

Throughout February and March, Justice for Workers is hosting a series of organizer trainings called Building Worker Power. As we approach the June 2 election, we need an army of leaders like you who have the skills, confidence and information necessary to organize in every workplace and community in Ontario.

It's Go Time

Posted on Action Updates by Rajean Hoilett · February 10, 2022 11:15 PM

Our next Decent Work Organizing Meeting is this Tuesday, February 15 at 7 pm EST. ASL interpretation and closed captioning will be available. We hope you can join us!

Yes - I’ll be there this Tuesday!

With the Ontario legislative assembly resuming on February 22, we must ensure our elected representatives stand up for us - not the big corporations who profit off our labour.

In this meeting, we'll organize for action in the following breakout groups:

  • Paid Sick Days

To date, no level of government has implemented meaningful sick day legislation. Join this group led by health providers in the Decent Work and Health Network to organize next steps in the fight for at least 10 permanent, employer-paid sick days for all.

  • Workplace health and safety, Justice for injured workers

For too long, injured workers have been denied justice. Instead, we have to fight the very government bodies that are supposed to protect us. At the same time, public and private sector workers continue to face working conditions that fail to protect us from COVID. Join this group to plan next steps to demand safe and healthy work for all of us and to ensure injured workers are treated fairly.

  • Early Childhood Education

Without adequate staffing, wages and safe working conditions, our children won’t get the care and learning resources they deserve. Meanwhile, Ontario is the only province that has not signed a $10/day child care agreement with the federal government. Join this breakout group to take action toward making real changes in Ontario’s childcare.

  • Protection for Gig Workers and an end to misclassification

Corporate lobbyists are working hand-in-hand with Ontario's Conservative government to pass legislation to make it legal for companies to misclassify us and take away our basic entitlements such as minimum wage and Employment Insurance. Join this breakout group to fight to end misclassification and stop the exploitation of gig workers.

  • Federal Issues

With parliament back in session and a federal budget around the corner, it’s time to turn up the heat on our federal members of parliament. Join this group to plan the next steps in the fight for decent federal income support, to fix Employment Insurance, for full immigration status for all, and for solidarity with Indigenous communities.

  • Decent Work and Wages

The decent work agenda means organizing to win a $20 minimum wage; adequate and predictable hours of work; real protections for temp agency workers; protections from wrongful dismissal and more. Join this breakout group to plan local outreach and follow-ups, build our local networks, and meet with MPPs.

We really need you! Can you join one of the breakout groups at Tuesday's Decent Work organizing meeting? Please RSVP now and bring a friend.
