Buckle-up: It’s 2025!
Let’s get ready for the year ahead with 2025’s first Ontario-wide online organizing meeting this Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Here’s the context we'll be facing.
Federal and Provincial Elections expected early in 2025
With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation on January 6 and a Liberal leadership race on March 9, a federal spring election is almost a certainty.
Meanwhile, it's likely there will be a snap Ontario election as early as February, with an announcement coming from Premier Doug Ford any day.
We believe Premier Ford is pushing for an early election to:
- Secure a new mandate before a possible win by federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre;
- Get ahead of any economic turmoil should US President-Elect Donald Trump follow-through on his promise to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian exports to the US;
- Coincide with the arrival of $200 government cheques mailed to everyone 18+ who filed taxes last year in Ontario; and also to
- Avoid bad press from the ongoing RCMP investigation into possible corruption surrounding Premier Ford’s plan to open the Ontario Greenbelt to corporate land developers.
The 1% gets (even) richer
Across Canada, the gap between the super-rich and the rest of us grows to record-setting levels. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, by 11:00 am on the first working day of 2025, Canada’s top 100 CEOs pocketed $62,661.
In other words, these CEOs made more in 2 hours than the average worker in Canada earns for a whole year. It’s also more than DOUBLE the earnings of a minimum wage earner who works 35 hours a week for 52 weeks.
Organize with us this Tuesday
Workers are fed up with corporate greed, and the rising cost of housing and groceries. That’s why we need to come together to fight back against bad bosses, CEO’s and the politicians who support them.
Will you join us this Tuesday, January 21, for our Justice for Workers online organizing meeting?
At our organizing meeting, we’ll hear from:
- Nurses and healthcare workers who are fighting for better patient care across Ontario;
- Education workers who are organizing at all levels, from early childhood through to post-secondary;
- Good news about public attitudes toward fair wages and strong public services, providing us with some real opportunities for organizing.
Everything we do between now and the upcoming elections will put us on a stronger footing for the fights that are sure to follow–regardless of who wins the provincial and federal elections.
I hope to see you on Tuesday, January 21 at 7:00 pm. RSVP for the meeting here to get the Zoom link.
