Support Hydro Ottawa Workers!

As of Wednesday, August 16 Hydro Ottawa workers will have been on strike for 50 days! These workers are fighting for safer working conditions, adequate compensation and benefits, and job security.

Safety violations by Hydro Ottawa reported to the Ministry of Labour have yet to be adequately addressed. In some instances, Hydro Ottawa has refused to provide Staple protective gear and clothing and has refused rest periods for shift workers. This puts everyone’s well-being and safety in jeopardy.

Hydro Ottawa Workers care about providing reliable power to Ottawans including rapid response to an increasing number of storms and power outages this year. But they are struggling with chronic understaffing as Hydro Ottawa pushes for contract stipulations that freeze wages and increase the percentage of precarious contract workers.

Access to clean energy is a critical part of a transition away from fossil fuels and towards a liveable future. However, for workers to remain in this field, or join in a transition away from the fossil fuel industry they need assurances their work will be protected. Safe work with adequate benefits, job security, adequate leave, and pensions are a necessity to ensure a secure energy grid for future generations.
