People really do care about others. Thousands seek careers in the helping professions. Sixty percent of people in Canada contribute unpaid volunteer work. And millions donate to food banks and other charities.
It feels good to help others, to be appreciated, and to feel a sense of purpose and belonging.
As living standards fall, the gap between what people need and what the system is willing to provide continues to widen. Increasingly, individuals and families are expected to fill that gap.
This creates a dilemma for social-change organizations: Should we focus on meeting the immediate, pressing needs of our communities, or should we focus on changing the system that creates those needs?
