In 1981, thirteen thousand CUPE hospital workers across Ontario defied hospital management, the provincial government, the courts, the police, the media, and their own union officials to stage a nine-day strike.
They did not have the legal right to strike but they struck anyway, for themselves, for each other, for their patients, and for all who work in and value public services. Their courageous story is told in this 1984 documentary, “Fighting Back!”
The Ontario Hospital Strike holds valuable lessons for us today.
