The needs of society determine how younger people are educated. In foraging and early agricultural societies, children learned by participating in the daily work of their communities. Until the 1800s, apprentice-based learning was the main form of learning.
Industrial capitalism established publicly funded, compulsory school systems to instill loyalty to the State, build a ‘national identity’ through standardized language, teach work discipline, and enforce obedience to authority. Higher education produced a professional manager class to administer the system.

The modern education system is an anti-democratic institution that blocks young people from shaping society to meet their needs. Instead, it reinforces existing ideas, hierarchies, and inequalities.

This meeting will explore:
• the conflict between what young people want to learn and the system’s need for a docile and productive labour force
• how professional schools ensure loyalty to the social order
• how the deepening capitalist crisis is affecting education
