In 1946, more than 2,000 Hamilton workers defied the law to strike Stelco, Canada’s largest steel mill. Mass pickets stopped anything entering or leaving the plant. More strikes erupted, until 20 percent of Hamilton’s industrial workers were on strike.

25,000 people swelled the picket lines to defend against police attacks. Kitchen staff refused to cook for police strike-breakers, and restaurant workers refused to serve them. After 81 days, Stelco surrendered to the workers’ demands.
