On Tuesday April 30, Dr. Michael Guerriere, CEO of Extendicare, a private long-term care home, will be giving a talk at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto) on the topic Thinking Differently: Recreating a Health System We Are Proud Of. While Dr. Guerriere will share how he’s “recreating” Ontario’s health system to address the issue of access to care and the struggle to meet the needs of an aging population, we know the solution is simple: put care over profit.
Dr. Guerriere is the CEO of Extendicare, one of Ontario’s largest long-term care providers, that diverted almost $4 billion in public funding away from improving care for residents to their profits over the last decade. Nurses and personal support workers (PSWs) who work in nursing homes know that recreating a health system we can be proud of starts with investing in staff-to-resident ratios and equal wages comparable to the hospital sector; not putting profit before care. Extendicare nurses and workers are in bargaining right now, and they are demanding #CareNOTprofit at Extendicare and all other for-profit corporations.
That’s why we’re picketing outside Rotman School during Extendicare CEO Dr. Guerriere’s talk. Join us! Let’s make it loud and clear to Extendicare CEO Dr. Guerriere that nurses and PSWs, and the broader community, will not stand by while resident care is eroded. It’s time for him to invest in staff-to-resident ratios and equal wages, so residents get the care they need and deserve!
Join us to put more pressure on Extendicare to meet nurses and PSW demands for #BetterStaffingBetterCare. For more information, contact Sherri Ludlow, at [email protected].
